2.16.09: A note from Trent and a wave goodbye

Towards the beginning of my career in Nine Inch Nails, our biggest break came in the form of an invitation to perform a series of shows with Jane's Addiction. These performances essentially created and defined the term "alternative" rock in the US, created an ongoing festival franchise that is still thriving (Lollapalooza), set the stage for Nirvana to shift popular taste a few months later, and were really fucking FUN to play and attend - truly the best times I've had. The shows were epic. So epic, they propelled NIN to the "next level" (whatever that means), but caused Jane's to implode. The band broke up at the end of that tour.

Fast forward to the present. Corporate rock STILL sucks. A friend tells me they saw the original Jane's lineup play a tiny show in LA that was unbelievable. I break out my Jane's records and am amazed by how vital they sound. These guys were the real deal and in this current climate mostly dominated by poseurs and pussies it was refreshing to hear something that sounded dangerous, volatile, beautiful and SINCERE.
Emails were sent, phone calls were made, dinner was arranged, ideas were discussed and the next thing I know we're in the studio experimenting. We laugh, we get to know each other, we cry, we yell, we almost quit, we record LOTS of guitar solos, we discuss, we actually begin to all communicate, we yell some more, we become FRIENDS, we laugh again and we do some great things. I get to see first hand why they broke up all those years ago but I also get the chance to see four distinct personalities that become an INCREDIBLE band when they're in the same room.

In NIN world, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of our first releases. I've been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while. Last year's "Lights in the Sky" tour was something I'm quite proud of and seems like the culmination of what I could pull off in terms of an elaborate production. It was also quite difficult to pull off technically and physically night after night and left us all a bit dazed. After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year. The approach to these shows is quite different from last year - much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted. Fun for us and a different way for you to see us and wave goodbye. I reached out to Jane's to see if they'd want to join us across the US and we all felt it could be a great thing. Will it work? Will it resonate in the marketplace? Who knows. Is there big record label marketing dollars to convince you to attend? Nope.
Does it feel right to us and does it seem like it will be fun for us and you? Yes it does.
Look for tour dates soon and I hope to see you out there.

Danger - 9/14 2007

Danger

Danger, much like Kavinsky ad Burial, is an absurdly gifted and artificially mysterious European DJ/producer (his songs don't even have proper names). He falls somewhere between Kavinsky and Justice in the current French Electro scene. Where Kavinsky recalls wasted afternoons pouring quarters into an Outrun coin-op, and Justice fuses familiar French Touch sounscapes with a Rock & Roll sense of immediacy, Danger's tracks come across as a blend of 80s horror/action movie and a hypnotic, Kraftwerk-ian feel. There isn't much information about Danger around yet (not even a wikipedia entry...), but the 9/14 2007 EP seems to be his only release so far, and it marks a truly stunning debut, with the real standout track being "11h30".

Squarepusher-Numbers Lucent EP(2009)

Squarepusher
One salient observation rarely made about Tom Jenkinson, aka Squarepusher, is that within his often-meandeirng canon, he skillfully navigates the path between invention and interpretation. Save a few releases (last fall's rock concert-fantasy Just a Souvenir among them), d'n'b freakouts like those on his new Numbers Lucent EP have dominated the rhythmic tenor of Jenkinson's schizoid suites. Jenkinson's virtuosic bass work and his jazz training, however, just as often forge a path between breakbeats and fusion. Such live-band musings, even if largely theoretical, have set him apart from his more austere dancefloor cohorts.(pitchfork)

"Throughout the record, their sound wanders drunkenly through a range of styles that hit upon everything from Motown, Psych, British R&B, Punk 60's Pop and Country all masked under the twang and fuzzed out umbrella of primitive garage. In fact that whole thing is done with such grace, I might use the word "swaggers" rather than wander." -blog.sailorjerry.com

Film School-Hideout(2007)

 Film School

If you've got some electrical engineering experience and a desire to get rich quick, here's my advice: Invent the Loveless effects pedal. You could pretty much charge whatever you want for it; while a few button pushes at the Sam Ash are all that separate you from getting the tone of Dimebag Darrell or whoever the DOD Grunge module is supposed to emulate, would-be Kevin Shields still go on Creation-style spending sprees to get anywhere near his sound. You're guaranteed brand loyalty as well, if Hideout is any indication. With an almost charming defiance, Bay Area foursome Film School are long on whooshy, gliding guitar lines and short on a whole lot that can distinguish them from the dozens of bands doing the same exact thing.

Tobacco-Fucked Up Friends(2008)

 Tobacco

Fucked Up Friends

Tobacco is the pseudonym of Tom Fec, architect of the reclusive (and frequently masked) Pittsburgh psychedelic pop outfit Black Moth Super Rainbow. Known for a tendency towards the peculiar (he recently made a mix for XLR8R.com entitled Songs To Get Killed in the Woods To and is rumored to produce tracks somewhere deep in the Pennsylvania forest), Tobacco employs old-fashioned electronic instrumentation such as analog synths and tape machines to create the hallucinatory sounds behind BMSR and his eponymous solo recordings. On Fucked Up Friends, his first companionless LP, Fec puts those toys to use for an effort that veers from his fulltime group's sunny-but-warped electronica and creeps towards a darker brand of instrumental hip-hop.
